INTERNATIONAL BLUES/ROCK HARMONICA STAR
COMES TO LOS ANGELES FOR RARE SHOW !
* * JASON RICCI * *

http://www.socalblues.org/EmailFiles/JasonRicciWithBand.jpeg

ONE OF THE WORLD’S GREATEST
MODERN BLUES HARP INNOVATORS
COMES TO TARZANA!

Want to witness one of the most astounding, foreward-thinking blues
harmonica masters on the contemporary blues and blues/rock scene? Look
no further. The amazing Jason Ricci is coming to Tarzana backed by a
cast of Los Angeles blues stalwarts who are going to put on an
absolutely sizzling show! Great guitarist Gino Matteo, rock-solid Bass
player Paul Loranger, and dazzling drummer Bernard Pershey are gonna
throw down with some smoldering contemporary, rocked-up and funked-out
new blues!

Raised in Portland, Maine, Jason Ricci is the son of
businessman/politician/activist Joe Ricci, founder of Elan School.
Ricci started playing music in punk bands at the age of 14. After
discovering a love of the harmonica and Blues music, he turned his
attention in that direction. In 1995, Ricci moved from Portland to
Memphis, TN, where shortly thereafter he placed first in the Sonny Boy
Blues Society contest at 21 years of age. Later that same year Ricci
recorded his first album, Jason Ricci.

In Memphis, Ricci began playing with David Malone Kimbrough, son of
blues great Junior Kimbrough, and soon was a part of the bands of both
Kimbroughs and was sitting in with R. L. Burnside. This also marked a
dark period for Ricci, which lead to trouble with the law. (How
bluesy!) In 1999, Ricci won the Mars National Harmonica Contest, and
began playing with Keith Brown, later recording with him as well.

In 2000, he received a two-page write up in Blues Access magazine by
Adam Gussow (harmonica player for Satan and Adam) saying: “I am
convinced he along with New Jersey’s Dennis Gruenling is one of the
best harmonica players of his generation.” After 15 months with Big Al
and the Heavyweights, Ricci started his own band, Jason Ricci & New
Blood, in 2002. This band features Shawn Starski, who, in June 2008,
was named by Guitar Player Magazine as one of the “Top Ten Hottest New
Guitarists.” In 2005, Ricci was honored with the Muddy Waters Most
Promising New Blues Artist award.

In 2007 Ricci and New Blood were signed to Eclecto Groove, a new
subdivision of Delta Groove Productions. His first album with the
label, titled Rocket Number Nine, was released October 23, 2007. Later
in 2009 the band recorded “Done With The Devil” for the same Label.
The band as a whole has been nominated for Blues Band of the Year
three times by Blues Wax magazine. Ricci won the Blues Critic Award
for Harmonica Player of the Year (2008) and was nominated for a Blues
Music Award for Harmonica Player of the Year in 2009 and 2010.

By January 2011, Jason had relocated to New Orleans, and assembled a
new band, Approved By Snakes, with guitarist John Lisi. Jason received
“Best Harmonica Player” at the May 6, 2010 Blues Music Awards.

This is a show not to be missed!

DEEP, TRADITIONAL 1940′S
BARELY-ELECTRIFIED BLUES BAND
FROM NORWAY!
** THE ELGINS **

http://www.socalblues.org/EmailFiles/THEELGINS.jpeg

We dubbed this night “Harmonica Heaven” because we are showcasing the
various sides of blues harp. Jason Ricci represents our progressive
artist and THE ELGINS are here to represent the long-lost, somewhat
delicate and esoteric, traditional side of blues harmonica, acoustic
piano and gently electrified guitar! Wait until you hear these
dedicated, real deal blues revivalists in a very intimate show! Lovers
of real deal blues you can’t afford to miss this. Come early and get a
seat close-up to the action.

The Elgins take a no-nonsense approach to the traditional Blues styles
of the late 40′s to mid 50′s found in Chicago and Arkansas. They
believe in using small tube amplifiers that produce the classic warm
tones found on the legendary recordings of musicians such as Muddy
Waters, Little Walter, Jimmy Rogers, Sunnyland Slim, Baby Face Leroy,
Robert Jr. Lockwood, Louis Myers, Fred Below, John Brim, Snooky Pryor,
Moody Jones, Both Sonny Boy Williamson’s, Robert Nighthawk, and Eddie
Taylor, etc. Although the members have many years experience, they are
focused not on individual stand-out performances but on a beautiful
hypnotic ensemble sound representative of a bygone era.

ONE OF CANADA’S BEST
1950′S STYLE HARP PLAYERS COMES TO LA!
** RAOUL BHANEJA **

http://www.socalblues.org/EmailFiles/RAOULBHANEJA.jpeg

Raoul Bhaneja is the wonderful 1950′s-style harp player from Raoul and
The Big Time – one of the most highly-regarded and awarded young blues
acts in Canada – having garned a Maple Blues Award for Best New Artist
in 1999 and N.O.W. Magazine’s Best Toronto Blues Artist in 2007.

Since forming in the summer of 1998 they have released four records to
critical acclaim, have performed on the main stages of many major
festivals across Canada and performed or recorded with the likes of
Bettye Lavette, Alvin Youngblood Hart, Downchild Blues Band, Junior
Watson, Big Dave Mclean, Rick Holmstrom, Kirk Fletcher, Fred Kaplan,
Curtis Salgado, Richard Innes, Rusty Zinn, Mark Hummel, Big Joe Maher
and many more.

PLUS SAN FERNANDO VALLEY’S OWN!
MICHAEL FELL

Pictured above with blues legend Honeyboy Edwards, San Fernando
Valley’s own Michale Fell will also throw down some tasty West Coast
style harp. Listed in his lengthy blues pedigree, Fell also happened
to be mentored by (and toured for years with) legendary jazz organist
Jimmy Smith. This is gonna be fun!
